Yesterday I had = the=20 opportunity to give the HomeBrew Electronics = (HBE) BIG=20 D overdrive/distortion pedal a workout for a = couple of=20 hours, and took some notes. Here are my initial = impressions of=20 the pedal. I will be testing it further today, and = will have=20 some sound clips up this week. I=92m still trying to = decide how=20 to organize the clips since the pedal is so complex.=20 Quick=20 background: I purchased the pedal at 30th St = Guitars in=20 NYC for approx. $250. All testing was done with a BKP = Miracle=20 Man bridge pickup and BKP Irish Tour neck pickup in an = all-maple guitar. Amplifiers used was a 1985 Marshall = JCM800.=20 Cabinets used were a Carvin 1x12, Marshall 1922 2x12, = and a=20 slant Rivera 4x12. Didn't use my Rivera Knucklehead, = altho I=20 tried ... the Rivera, even with 2 tubes pulled out and = runing=20 at 55W, is SUPER LOUD. THE OUTSIDE The = pedal=20 itself is approx. 4.5=94 W, 3.5=94 D, and 2.0=94 H. = The chasis is=20 made of cast steel, and is very rugged. Some of the = components=20 are actually riveted to the chasis! The right side of = the=20 pedal has the input and 9v DC jacks. The left side of = the=20 pedal contains the output jack. Both the input and = output=20 jacks are locking Swtichcraft =BC=94 jacks. The pedal = rests on=20 four rubber feet, very well attached, but not so = special that=20 it would be hard to replace them. The paintjob on the = pedal is=20 amazing!! It = has so=20 many coats of day-glo orange paint that the pedal = appears to=20 be made of plastic. There is also a metal flake in the = paint=20 to give the pedal a =91sparkly=92 look. The bottom panel is held in place = by four=20 nickel machine screws. I was a little disappointed to = open the=20 chasis and see an Eveready battery inside. (Pedal was = brand=20 new, so this must be the battery chosen by HBE; I = prefer=20 Duracel batteries, but I also like the =93Golden = Power=94=20 batteries that Fulltone stocks in their pedals as = well.) I=20 will be doing all further testing with a Duracel 9v = battery.=20 Inside the pedal you can see the = diode=20 select switch, which is hardwired to the actual = diodes, but=20 covered in grey gook, covering the =91secret=92 = components.=20 There are 4 knobs across the top = of the=20 pedal: Gain, Tone, Level, and Bigger. None of these = knobs are=20 indented at their =91neutral=92 position, and I = don=92t know what it=20 is, but I will be calling HBE tomorrow to find out. = All of the=20 knobs are on extra long shafted pots, and the tapers = are=20 incredibly smooth. I would definitely use this pedal = on a=20 pedal board, not just sitting on the stage floor where = an=20 errant cable or accidental kick can move the knobs.=20 The middle of the pedal contains the clip = select=20 switch, which allows you to set the threshold for the = gain=20 slipping. When Hard is=20 selected, the gain circuit has less headroom and clips = sooner.=20 When Soft is = selected,=20 the gain circuit has more headroom and takes more to = clip.=20 Generally speaking, the H setting worked well with the = single=20 coil pickup but was a bit too solid state sounding = with the=20 humbucker. The S setting worked a treat with the = humbucker,=20 and retained a glassy, vintage breakup sound for the = single=20 coil. For high gain single coil work, I would use the = H=20 setting, tho. There are also two indicator = lights in=20 the middle of the pickup, one RED (for ON/OFF) and the = other=20 YELLOW (when the Bigger function is = activated). _________________ Okay, 10 out of 10 for = style,=20 Trillian; but, like, minus several million for=20 execution! SONICS AND TESTING = Okay,=20 how does the pedal sound? It=92s GREAT!! Is it better = than the=20 Fulltone Full-Drive 2? For my taste, yes, it is. One = of the=20 settings is comparable to the FD2, but it=92s = definitely not=20 identical. The HBE is much more open and transparent = sounding,=20 much higher gain, and much louder. It=92s not as soft = sounding=20 as the FD2, nor does it sound so tube like. I = dialed=20 in a tone on the JCM800 to the point where there was = the=20 barest amount of tube breakup. (Gain on 5, Boost = Volume on=20 2.5, Master Volume on 3) With the HBE on, but with and = the=20 Level set just above unity gain (slightly louder with = the=20 pedal on), the amp was already driven right into a = singing,=20 vintage overdrive!! When the gain is turned up, the = tone goes=20 into beautifully saturated distortion, very high in = harmonic=20 content. I was able to get pinch harmonics with no = problem,=20 yet could still hear every note in a chord. = Initially,=20 I thought that the pedal sounded very = =91transistory=92 =85 you=20 could hear the pedal=92s effect over that of the amp. = When I=20 switched to the 2x12, though, this went away and the = tone=20 really = opened up!!=20 Switching to the 4x12, the tone opened up even more, = and I=20 could hear that more gain would be needed to get all 4 = drivers=20 to sound properly distorted. I systematically = went=20 through all 5 of the diode settings, both with hard = and soft=20 clipping. The setting I like the most right now is #3, = Soft=20 clipping, with the Gain, Tone, and Level at 12:00.=20 When I switched on the =93Bigger=94 effect, I = could see=20 why this is not called a boost. It is another gain = stage. When=20 turned up too high, I was getting feedback. At a lower = setting, it filled out the tone nicely, but I really = didn=92t=20 have time to do any critical listening with Bigger = being on=20 and off. I hope to get that done tonight. My=20 conclusion to the first round of testing is =96 this = pedal can=20 do it all, from mild boosting of the input of your = tube amp=20 all the way to power metal tones. I was surprised at = how=20 modern of a power metal tone I was getting from the = JCM800 =85 a=20 very hot rodded tone I associate with bands like = Silent Force,=20 Helloween, Firewind, Hammerfall, etc. In Part = 2, I=20 will have clips overviewing what the pedal sounds=20 like. _________________ Okay, 10 out of 10 for = style,=20 Trillian; but, like, minus several million for=20 execution!

Cool rig. The peddle review is = definately=20 very interesting, especially when compared to the FD2. = Great=20 review, I would not mind trying one out for myself, as = I want=20 a more open sounding overdrove pedal to compliment my=20 FD2.

Unfortunately, because = this=20 forum has only been in existence for a short time, = most of my=20 previous gear reviews are lost somewhere on the = Seymour Duncan=20 user's forum ... Rivera Knucklehead as both a 100W/50W = head=20 comparison, Korg Pandora, Roland synth + VG-88, and a = few=20 others.

The low end sounds very tight, and I've only=20 experienced a couple of 'hi end' pedals that had what = I would=20 condiser a tubby bottom -- the EMMA pedals and the = Time=20 Machine Boost.

I really don't use much low end = in my=20 sound, tho. There was a lot o more low end when I used = the=20 Rivera head, but that amp is just a total beast. =

I am=20 going to be setting up the mic for the sound clips = tonight;=20 with luck I will have them up ver soon!

Yep, Paul Rivera is a very = unknown=20 quantity over here which is a shame. I kick myself = from time=20 to time for not buying a Fender Concert (a Rivera = design) a=20 few years back for less than =A3300. It would have = proved a=20 bargain as these are making around =A3700 these days. = They are=20 seen as the last of the colectable Fender amps. =

A good=20 friend has a R55. Stonking tones. I would not mind one = of the=20 30 watt versions as my 'portable' amp.

I'm running my 100W with 2 tubes = removed as=20 a 55 watter ... it's still the loudest head on earth = ... at=20 55W you get more bottom end and a more modern tone. = For=20 recording, I prefer the taughtness of the full 100W, = tho.=20
